No. 73 Effect of Cyclodextrin on Antibacterial Activity of Manuka Oil

Background

Our company has attract attention technologies in functional food and personal care fields which raises the water solubility, stability and bioavailability of functional ingredients by using the inclusion property of cyclodextrin (CD).

Our company also has investigated Manuka honey has high amount of methylglyoxal (MGO) as an antibacterial constituent. Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) give us not only Manuka honey, but also Manuka oil extracted from Manuka leaf. Because of high content of triketone derivatives, Manuka oil shows remarkable antibacterial activity than other essential oils (* please refer to the newest result of research "10th", "11th", "41th" and "71th" of our homepage for details.).

In this study, enhancement of antibacterial activity of Manuka oil with CD was explored for developments of new effective antibacterial products.

Triketone derivatives : Antibacterial constituents of Manuka oil

Experiment : Antibacterial activity of Manuka oil - CD complex against S. aureus and C. albicans.

Bacterias

  • Staphylococcus aureus (IFO12732)
  • Candida albicans (ATCC18804)

Samples

  • Manuka oil - CD complex
  • Manuka oil
  • α-CD
  • Squalane

Methods

Antibacterial activities of the reagents were evaluated from CFU measurements.

Result : Antibacterial activities of Manuka Oil - CD complexes against S. aureus.

Result : Antibacterial activities of Manuka Oil - CD complexes against C. albicans.

Fig. 2

→ Manuka oil - α-CD showed the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus and C. albicans in all samples.

Conclusion

Manuka oil - α-CD complex could be applied as a key ingredient of antibacterial products.
