Piperine (PIP) is an alkaloid responsible for the pungency of pepper. It has been reported that PIP has many health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, improving cold sensitivity, and reducing swelling. In addition, PIP is also known to have the characteristic effect as a bioavailability enhancer of other food components such as functional ingredients like coenzyme Q10, curcumin and ferulic acid (FA), as well as vitamins and minerals. However the very high hydrophobicity is a problem of PIP causes its low oral absorbability and bioavailability. Generally, cyclodextrins (CDs) can enhance oral absorbability and bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds via encapsulation. We reported that the inclusion of PIP with α-CD improves the water solubility and oral absorbability of PIP in rats. Therefore, PIP-α-CD may show as a superior bioavailability enhancer of other food components, than PIP without α-CD. In this study, we investigated the further enhanced bioavailability of FA by the combination of complexation with α-CD5 and co-administration of PIP-α-CD. |
